Discover Castle Hill- and visit an attraction steeped in History

Discover Castle Hill, its resplendent Manor House and beautiful gardens, steeped in rich history. Castle Hill gardens surround the magnificent Palladian house which was built in 1730 as the Earl Fortescue’s North Devon family home

Today Castle Hill is home to the 15th generation of the family. It is set in a spectacular 18th Century parkland landscape punctuated with statues, follies and temples built by each generation of the Fortescues.

A stroll through the Millennium Garden along pathways and amongst woodland gardens offers visitors an abundance of sights and scents. From the pinks, reds and whites of the camellias in the spring to the red, amber and gold of the autumn, the gardens offer a haven of tranquility with each new season. After a full calendar of colour and beauty the winter brings an opportunity for crisp winter walks and atmospheric photography.

A wander by the river to the Ugley Bridge reveals a host of rhododendrons, azaleas, camellias and magnolias. A climb to the Castle is worth every step for the reward of panoramic views to Exmoor, Dartmoor and beyond.

Beyond the gardens are two sites, the recently restored Holwell Temple which sits on the edge of the woods and the Kennel standing proudly on Oxford Down. A walk to both structures adds to the visit.

Restricted access for visitors in wheelchairs or those with limited mobility due to layout of the gardens. Dogs on leads welcome.

The garden has an excellent tearoom serving light lunches and homemade cakes which can be enjoyed either sitting outside or indoors depending on the weather.

A magnificent venue for weddings and outdoor events including Open-Air Theatre Productions.
