Call the Midwife Christmas Afternoon Teas in Commissioner’s House at The Historic Dockyard Chatham

Following the popularity of the Call the Midwife tours introduced earlier this summer The Historic Dockyard Chatham continues the vintage theme with Call the Midwife Christmas afternoon teas, exclusively for Groups, in Commissioner’s House during December.

The festive fare of sandwiches, seasonal cakes and of course everyone’s favourite part – scones, jam and cream – is the filling to this special afternoon.  The Dockyard’s very own ‘Midwife’ will meet the group and impart stories and behind the scenes ‘gossip’ before and after tea.

Call the Midwife lunches and dinners and Retro Party Nights are also available, so, whichever organisers choose, the Group will enjoy a step back in time for this year’s seasonal celebrations in the elegantly decorated surroundings of the oldest Naval building in Britain still in use today.

The lunches offer the choice of a two or three course meal, whilst the dinner option adds carollers to greet the group, a welcoming glass of seasonal cheer and a three course festive dinner.  Both also include the Dockyard Midwife with her stories and behind the scenes ‘gossip’.

All the Call the Midwife options are held in the Ballroom of Commissioner’s House, the location for filming the restaurant scene at the ‘Grosvenor Hotel’ in series two of the popular TV series, which will be dressed to reflect the vintage style of the programme, with a festive twist.  Minimum group size is 15 and maximum size 40.

The Retro Party Nights will provide plenty of “I remember that!” moments and are full of great festive fun whether group members are into all things Vintage or Retro or just looking for something different this Christmas.  The evening includes a festive drink, buffet and disco with music from the ‘50s through to the ‘90s.  If the whole group is dressed in retro style of whichever era then they will each receive a complimentary glass of bubbly.

The Historic Dockyard Chatham became Poplar Docks and many other locations for the filming of series one, two and the 2012 Christmas Special of Call the Midwife, the popular TV drama.  The ballroom in Commissioner’s House was used for the restaurant of the Grosvenor Hotel in series two.

Commissioner’s House is the oldest naval building to survive intact and in use in Britain today.  It was built in 1704 to house the Resident Commissioner, his family and servants.  A member of the Navy Board but resident at Chatham, the Commissioner was responsible for the day-to-day running of the dockyard.  The house has changed little since it was built, although some internal modifications have been made.  The principle feature internally is the main staircase with its magnificent ceiling painting.
