Joey and Topthorn appear at the front of The Regent Theatre to celebrate the arrival of War Horse to Stoke-on-Trent

The stars of War Horse made a sensational appearance at the front of The Regent Theatre yesterday (Tuesday 23 September) to welcome the spectacular production to Stoke-on-Trent.

Horses Joey and Topthorn were pictured together outside – for the very first time on this tour – to welcome War Horse to The Regent Theatre.

Topthorn is first met by Joey in War Horse when he first ends up in the British Cavalry and the pair become loyal friends. They were joined by actors, Lee Armstrong, and Stoke-on-Trent born Jason Furnival.   Jason  (who plays Carter and Strauss) trained in Leicester and lives in Newcastle-under-Lyme.  His many credits include  ITV’s Downton Abbey. Meanwhile Lee stars as Albert Narracott in the show.

Also in attendance were puppeteers who operate the horses. The puppeteers are: Peter Twose (Joey Head), Michael Humphreys (Joey Heart), Suzanne  Nixon (Joey Hind) and on Topthorn:  Richard Vorster (Topthorn Head), Joe Darke (Topthorn Heart), Linford Johnson (Tophthorn Hind). War Horse opens at The Regent Theatre on Wednesday 24 September and runs until Saturday 11 October.

War Horse is the powerful story of a young boy called Albert and his beloved horse, Joey, who has been requisitioned to fight for the British in World War I. Caught in enemy crossfire, Joey ends up serving on both sides during the war before landing in No Man’s Land, while Albert, not old enough to enlist, embarks on a treacherous mission to find his horse and bring him home.

A remarkable tale of courage, loyalty and friendship, War Horse features ground-breaking puppetry work by South Africa’s Handspring Puppet Company, which brings breathing and galloping horses to life on stage.
