Markets in Boston

Boston has one of the oldest market traditions in the country, and while that alone makes it worth a visit there is much more to do and see.

However, if variety, quality and value for money are attractions, then you will find a Wednesday or Saturday visit to Boston worthwhile.

Boston Market is almost 900 years old – trading fairs or “marts” have been held in Boston since at least the 12th Century. The main market is held in the Market Place which underwent a £2 million refurbishment project a few years ago and has been described as one of the best medieval market places in the country.

In addition to the Wednesday and Saturday markets in the Market Place itself, the Bargate Green Market is held every Wednesday on Bargate Green. This market also offers a range of goods and local produce and includes an auction “on the stones” starting at 9.30am each week, selling everything from plants to cars.

Boston is south Lincolnshire’s historic gem. Its soaring St Botolph’s Church, more famously known as Boston Stump, is incomparable in the Fenland landscape. Superbly rich in heritage, the town also has on offer to the visitor the Guildhall and Fydell House – both with free admission.

The town also has a shopping offer which includes some of the major national chains, substantially-sized private operators and a mix of smaller independents.

Toilets: If you arrive by bus or coach there are public toilets nearby at Lincoln Lane. If you have used the Cattle Market car park for your own vehicle, there are public toilets in this car park. There are also public toilets on the way to the market from this car park, near the entrance to Central Park. Toilets are also available, under a community toilet scheme, at Oldrids department store in pedestrianised Strait Bargate, Waterfall Plaza shopping mall off Strait Bargate and at St Botolph’s Church (Boston Stump).
