Settle’s Historic Tuesday Market

A Royal charter was granted in 1248 by Henry lll to hold an open air market every Tuesday, Settle began to grow as a place for trade and commerce.

Today over 30 regular market stalls provide an excellent range of local Yorkshire Dales produce including meat, cheese, butter, eggs, bread, cakes and greengrocery as well as high quality retail goods such as ladies and gents fashions, leather goods, hardware and pet products at attractive prices.

The centrally located Market Place is also surrounded by numerous independent shops and cafes with the impressive listed buildings of the Shambles and the recently refurbished Town Hall providing a backdrop. Towering above the Market Place is the easily accessible Castleberg Crag a high Limestone outcrop with spectacular views of the whole town.

Only a few level strides from the Market Place is Victoria Hall (England’s oldest surviving music hall) which provides an additional indoor market venue. Selling cards, gifts, bric-a- brac, home baking, stationary and bespoke jewellery and fabric.

Free coach parking at the Whitefriars car park located 100 yards from the market place provides ample parking.

A warm welcome is extended to all coach travellers. Coach drivers may receive concessionary prices at local  shops/cafés on production of their identification in appreciation of their custom.

Group Organisers and Coach Operators should contact the Market Superintendent Marjorie Tindale or alternatively the Town Clerk Rebecca Hill on 01729 823617 or via email: clerk@settletowncouncil.org.uk
