Tourists can get a healthy dose of history in Carmarthen which claims to be one of the oldest towns in Wales and in the 16th Century, was dubbed “the chief citie of the country” by Historian, William Camden. The town is also home to an ancient Roman fort, believed to date back to AD75, and close by are the remains of an amphitheatre, one of only two such sites in Wales.

Those seeking retail therapy will be delighted with a trip to St Catherine’s Walk Shopping Centre which offers over 20 outlets, including high street giants Debenhams and Next, as well as brands such as Hotter, Joules and Fat Face. To fuel their spending spree, shoppers can stop off for an indulgent treat at one of the centre’s eateries, including the some of the nation’s favourites; Costa, Pizza Express and Harvester.

If shopping is not for everyone on board, film fanatics can catch the latest releases and enjoy a range of special screenings at Vue cinema which boasts six state-of-the-art 3D digital screens. In addition to fashion, food and film, St Catherine’s Walk holds a variety of family-friendly events throughout the year, including food and craft markets, Easter and Halloween events, a Christmas Market and Christmas Lights Switch-on – so there’s truly something for everyone.

Named this year as one of the best places to live in Wales, you should be sure to carry out a head count on departure from Carmarthen, as some visitors may be tempted to stay behind!
