For three decades, DFDS’ Newcastle-Amsterdam route has been an open invitation to adventure, beckoning travellers to explore, connect, and create unforgettable memories.
First launched in 1995, this service has grown into a celebrated passage, now carrying over 600,000 passengers yearly. Stretching across the North Sea, this iconic connection unites the UK and Europe, offering every passenger a chance to discover new horizons.
Step behind the scenes as DFDS marks the route’s anniversary with insights from the Route Director.
What attracted you to working at DFDS?
I was eager to build a career in the travel industry with a strong focus on sales. DFDS offered a dynamic environment & an opportunity to grow professionally within a sector that I was passionate about. It was a natural fit & an exciting challenge.
Have there been any significant upgrades to the route’s services and facilities?
Absolutely. In 2024 alone, we invested €10 million in upgrading our cabins & an additional €2.8 million in enhancing public areas such as our restaurants, bars, & on-board shop. These improvements are designed to elevate the on-board experience & keep our service competitive in the modern travel landscape.
Looking ahead, what’s the vision for the future of this route?
We’re currently working on the design & configuration of two new-build vessels, planned for introduction by 2029/2030. These ships will bring state-of-the-art amenities and improved capacity, with a particular focus on freight & transportation passengers. The goal is to continue growing while ensuring high standards & sustainable operations.
